Chatham House: Feeding of the Nine Billion
Chatham House’s Royal Institute for International Affairs is internationally respected as one of the leading centres for independent analysis in the world. This Chatham House publication, The Feeding of the Nine Billion: Global Food Security for the 21st Century (Evans, 2009), analyses the challenges to global food security in the wake of the 2005-08 food price spikes. The report acknowledges the World Bank’s estimate that the recent food price spikes have increased the world’s undernourished population by as much as 100 million and explores the obstacles impeding the feeding our hungry world. Issues such as, impacts of climate change, energy security, water scarcity, land competition, and increasing food demand are embraced in the scope of the work as the report explores policy options at a global level.
This report is an aerial view of some if the main issues facing our global food system; content is directed towards policy-makers and covers a lot of difficult terrain in broad brush strokes, acting as a handsome summary of the big issues.
