Bearing the Weight of Britain’s Child Obesity
The independent research company, Datamonitor, yesterday released its report on the rate of Britain’s child obesity. Alarmingly, the report declared that British children are spending nearly twice as much annually on sweets and chocolates, with British average spending at £372 as compared to £150 for American children. The report continues to report that more than one in three British children aged 5-13 are already overweight, with a rapidly increasing trend expected in the coming years.
This report is particularly bad news for the British Government whose efforts had hoped to stem the rate of obesity through programmes such as the 5 A Day campaign and a push to serve healthier food in public schools. The increasing trend in obesity will also place greater pressure on the NHS as instances of diabetes and related illnesses are certain to rise.
A summary of the reports findings can be found here.
